Susan Boyle claims Her Home Is Haunted By Her Deceased Mother
by ghostmap

Susan Boyle has come out and admitted that she believes her home is haunted by the spirit of her late mother and insists that she’s encountered her at least once since she passed away 4 years ago.
The Scottish star, who became an overnight music sensation after appearing on Britain’s Got Talent in 2009, was devoted to her mother Bridget and was devastated when she passed away at the age of 91, back in 2007.

In fact it was Mrs. Boyle who had inspired her daughter to try out for the television program and the vocalist has frequently spoken of how she wanted to dedicate her success to her dearly departed mother.

Now she’s insisted that she encounters her mother’s ghost in the former council house they shared in Blackburn, West Lothian.

When asked about her paranormal which grants Boyle say’s“The council house is my mother’s house. Her energy is still there. It’s my comfort zone. My mother said, ‘look after my house and look after my cat Pebbles’, and that’s what I did. I’ve actually seen my mother in the house. She wasn’t troubled. I think she was letting me know she was all right. There was a lovely smell. Perhaps it was her perfume, I’m not sure.”

She added: “I used to think she’d abandoned me when she died. Maybe she was telling me she hadn’t.”

Susan Boyle who is now 50 years old, has moved back into the former family home she shared with her brothers and sister from a bigger more modern home she had purchased nearby after feeling uncomfortable and lonely.

Bridget’s death in 2007 for time had deeply affected Susan who stopped singing as she was so grief-stricken. Eventually however, Susan remembered how much faith her mother had in her, and decided to give professional singing one last attempt.

I have known idea if her home is actually haunted, but I do know that holding onto someone dear to us can prevent them from completely crossing over. Perhaps that is what has happened here. In this case if her spirit truly is inside the home I see no harm in it, in fact it may be just what a lonely old woman needed to have faith in herself and leave her mark

Reader submited: The Queen Mary
by ghostmap

One Sunday afternoon my family decided to take a day trip to Long Beach and i, being the ghost fanatic and all, suggested the Queen Mary. So we decided to go there. When we got there we went to the counter and purchased tickets for the Ghost Encounters Tour. We were informed that the tour allows you to visit the swimming pool area and the lowest and deepest parts of the ship and the tour itself is about a little over an hour long. So my family and i met the tour guide along with all the other people taking the tour and we began our journey to the bottom of the ship. Let me first start off by saying that i am a BIG ghost fanatic…but i never expected to witness or experience anything because i thought only the lucky ones could have experiences. Anyways continuing on…our tour gets to the part where the boiler and ship gadgets and machinery are and the tour guide begins to tell us of a tragic incident that happened way back when the ship was sailing and functioning. He tells us about this young man who was doing his duties and managing the machinery, when suddenly the young man was walking through these steel doors from the ship and he was crushed to death horizontally as he tried to walk through this door labeled door 13. So in my head i was thinking of the helplessness this man must have experienced and such a sudden death. So anyways as the tour guide finished his story my dad and i were the last ones to exit the machinery room…when from out of nowhere i saw this black solid figure of a man standing to my right behind the machinery. I stared at it for a good 10 seconds or so and then i quickly turned away in disbelief. When i looked back in that direction the figure was no longer there. I could’nt believe what i had just seen..it was so unexpected and completely incredible…i witnessed for the very first time a ghost. So with that being said..i encourage anyone, if you are in the area of Long Beach, go and take a visit at the Queen Mary and go explore the ship for yourself.

Haunted Star of India ship
by ghostmap

The Star of India,(originally known as The Euterpe) is the oldest, working sailing ship in the world. The strongest ghost is a young man by the name of John Campbell. In 1884, John Campbell, a teen-aged boy seeking adventure, stowed away on The Euterpe. He was eventually discovered and put to work to earn his keep. While tending to the masts, about 100 feet above the deck, his foot slipped and he fell to the deck below, breaking both legs. He died 3 days later in great pain. He now haunts the mast where he fell off.

The other main ghost on the ship goes by Captain. He is always working on his logs and charts and barking orders to a non-exsistant crew.

The Star of India sailing ship is docked at the Maritime Museum of San Diego. 1492 North Harbor Drive, San Diego, CA 92101.

The Ghostly Goings On Of The Aristocracy
by ghostmap

You can take coach tours to ogle at the homes of the rich and famous. Celebrity makes a home famous but before celluloid was invented the aristocracy were the Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie of their day.

And when your home has a grand name such as Blickling Hall or Buckland Abbey, you can bet the lives of those who lived there were larger than life too.

Ghost stories abound in historic country homes, and perhaps if you lived in a home as beautiful as Buckland Abbey, your spirit wouldn’t want to leave its four walls either. The 700-year-old building with its 16th-century great hall was home of the Elizabethan seafarer Sir Francis Drake. Drake may be more at home in the pages of history books than Hello magazine but he was famous in his day. Drake lived in glory as a national hero while he was alive but perhaps in death he didn’t find peace. It’s rumoured that he and his accompanying ‘hell hounds’ haunt his former home.

Even though historic homes are resplendent in their grandeur, it seems as though there are a lot of unhappy souls drifting through their halls. In Norfolk, Blickling Hall’s creaks and draughts are not innocent gusts of wind; the noises are attributed to the dying groans of Sir Henry Hobart. Sir Henry died after wounds he received during a duel proved fatal. Not content with one ghost, Anne Boleyn’s unhappy spirit is said to wander the grounds of the medieval manor. And with its parkland, lakeside walks and sunken garden, who can blame her?

Over in Cornwall, another medieval house, Cotehele, has plenty of ghostly goings on. The 500-year-old home is said to have a whole host of hazy figures who appear with a strange herbal smell.

Geography knows no bounds for ghouls. In West Yorkshire, East Riddlesden Hall boasts a Woman in White. This spooky vision is said to be the lady of this atmospheric 17th-century manor house, who drowned in the ground’s fish pool. And how’s this for scandal and intrigue? Another unfortunate female is the Grey Lady, reputed to have been locked in her room to starve to death after her husband discovered her with a lover. It sounds like something from a novel. And rather fittingly the home’s pond was used as a film location for the 1992 production of Wuthering Heights.

It may be hundreds of years ago but some things never change. Dogs were a man’s best friend back then too. And Elizabeth, Duchess of Lauderdale, loved her pooch. Her ghost is said to linger in the lavish rooms of Surrey’s Ham House, accompanied by her King Charles Spaniel. Ham House is reputedly one of Britain’s most haunted houses.

Ghost stories often have a sad twist to the tale as unhappy spirits roam with tales of woe or unfinished business. For the Lady in Grey at Rufford Old Hall, one of Lancashire’s finest 16th-centry buildings, it was a tale of true love. Elizabeth Hesketh fell ill while her husband was fighting overseas. She vowed she would not die without first bidding farewell to her beloved husband, who sadly never returned from war.

There’s no question that English house names can add prestige. Naming homes has its roots in the gentry who named their Halls, Castles, Manors and Lodges according to ancestry.

Even if you are not from landed gentry, or your house hasn’t a grand name like Blickling Hall, who knows what ghosts haunt your home?

Fort Shelby Hotel
by ghostmap

The old boarded up Fort Shelby Hotel has stood abandon for over twenty years on Lafayette Street near the outskirts of Detroit’s business district.

For years it was shelter for homeless men who would find there way inside the building to find refuge from the brutal Michigan winters. For years the only tenant in the old hotel was the notorious Anchor Bar a favorite watering hole for reporters from the areas two newspapers. For years it had been known as a place where police, politicians, priests and pressmen could go for a cold beer, a greasy hamburger and place abet on your favorite horse race or football game.

A local street person who was known only as Moe found part-time work doing odd jobs at the bar. After leaving the bar in the early morning hours he would leave the bar and make his way to the rear of the hotel and enter the building through some boards that he had loosened.  Moe was a one eyed black man who’s face showed the results of years of drinking and living on the street. He was quiet and polite but he was often seen driving away other street people who might try to make their residence in the ruins of the old building. Sometime during the early 90’s some rotted plumbing gave out in one of the hotels basement levels and unbeknownst to the bar caused all of their sewage to flow out into the hotel basement.  For several years people that worked in adjacent buildings noticed and complained about the smell to city officials but it was blamed on sluggish sewers in the area. The bar itself was spared the odor because it was totally sealed off from the hotel proper.

During an unusually rare building inspection the startling discovery of years of human waste was discovered. They say that it was well over four feet deep. Inside one of the rooms they found the skeletal remains of Old Moe.  He did not drown in the sewage but it is suspected he became mired in the sludge as he came down a stairwell and could not free himself while in the dark and probably inebriated.  Strange as his death may seem the strange part of the story is that people that work in the area still claim to see old Jim walking through the alleys near the old hotel.  There are reports of seeing Jim late at night sitting in the alley behind the old Fort Shelby Hotel and some claim to have seen lights moving through some of the lower floors of the building.  Some even swear they have heard noises coming from inside the building.

The bar is has moved out long ago and the building is now well boarded and secure. Is it the city steam that pours from the manholes and pavement that people mistake for someone moving through the alleys or is it Old Moe still standing guard defending his turf at the old Fort Shelby Hotel.

The Chiles Mansion in Davis, CA
by ghostmap

The 15-room house  was built in 1902 by William D. and Clara Chiles and joined by a large barn and other outbuildings on the cemetery-adjacent property, which today is located at 2411 East 8th Street and known as Sunrise Farm.

The property remained in the Chiles family until the early 1960s, when the house and about five acres of surrounding land were purchased by Larry Z. McFarland, an anatomy professor at the School of Veterinary Medicine at UC Davis. He lived in the home with his wife, Sonia, and three children, Michael, Kenneth and Nina.

By April 7, 1972, Larry and Sonia McFarland had separated, and Larry McFarland had moved into an apartment at 1521 E. Eighth St., just a few blocks from the house. That day he flew kites with his children, and made plans to go fishing the next day with his sons and father-in-law, who lived nearby in El Macero. That night Sonia McFarland put Kenneth, 10, and Nina, 9 — both students at Birch Lane Elementary School — to bed for the night, while Michael, 14, attended his first dance at Holmes Junior High School. She picked him up from the dance at about 10:45 and returned to the Chiles Mansion at about 11 p.m.

The Davis Fire Department received a call at 11:50 p.m., reporting that the Chiles Mansion was totally engulfed in flames. The entire home was gutted before the flames were controlled and firefighters could enter. In the master bedroom, they found the charred bodies of Sonia McFarland and the three children lying face up on a bed, with the body of Larry McFarland, 41, slumped over them. Several of the bodies, including Larry McFarland’s, bore gunshot wounds. An empty gasoline can was found near the front door, along with evidence that fires had been set in four or five locations downstairs.

Investigators found a two-page, eight-paragraph, handwritten note titled “last will and testament” in Larry McFarland’s pickup truck, which was parked nearby. “I am taking the life of myself and my family in the belief that a family should remain together in life or in death,” the note read. Other portions of the note, which had been carefully signed by McFarland on each page, designated McFarland’s mother as the sole beneficiary of his estate, and stated that the bodies should be cremated and buried together in Davis Cemetery. The note was dated April 7, 1972.

After a lengthy court process, Mary Bado Simmons, the mother of Sonia McFarland and grandmother of Michael, Kenneth and Nina, won the ability to not bury their remains with “the murderer.” She also won full legal rights to the property.

The house was never rebuilt. All that remains are the surrounding sidewalks, as well as barns and other outbuildings. Mary Bado Simmons kept the entire property in an undeveloped state as a memorial to her grandchildren, son-in-law and daughter.

The grounds are still haunted to this day by the ghost of Larry McFarland as well as it’s original owners William D. and Clara Chiles. This property is depressing and the ghosts live in torrment.

Arghh Matey! Blackbeard’s ghost calls North Carolina home
by ghostmap

Legendary pirate Edward Teach is still as colorful an individual as ever and calls Beaufort, North Carolina home. Blackbeard’s main place of residency is at the Hammock House his former home when he was alive. The house boasts a 300 year old cemetery in which Teach’s 18 year old French common-law wife was hung from a oak tree in and is buried.
Blackbeard is actually a very well educated man and most of the legends of how barbaric he was are completely fabricated on his end in order to drive fear into the hearts of his “victims”. However in the afterlife he has turned into the person he wanted people to believe he was because of his violent death in which he was shot five times and stabbed more than twenty times before he died and was decapitated.
Teach loves to hang out at the house and sit looking out over what is now Taylor’s creek. However if you do come across him I suggest you RUN!!!

Five of the most haunted castles in Europe!
by ghostmap

People have been fascinated by castles for thousands of years, offering a gothic allure, being surrounded by myths or supposedly frequented by ghosts. In Europe, numerous castles are recognised as being haunted by ghosts, vampires or witches. If you would like to experience how real these ghost encounters really are, here are five of the most haunted castles in Europe!

1. The Bran Castle, Transylvania, Romania
Situated deep inside the Carpathian Mountains, the castle which is over a thousand years old is best celebrated as being Dracula’s Castle. In the 1400s. Vlad III Dracul is probably among the most infamous images of cruelty, due to his preferred method of torture, the impalement. Only the cruelness does not end here. Dracula preferred some even more gruesome tortures, including pounding nails into the thief’s head, hacking off limbs, blinding, and strangulation, burning or boiled alive, scalping or skinning alive. The castle is filled with instruments from the time of Vlad, being a museum for over forty years now.

2. Windsor Castle, London, England
Home of the present Queen of England, the Windsor castle is over 900 years old, and it is host to several ghosts from England’s past. King Henry VIII has been seen walking the hallways of the castle. Many guests said they heard footsteps, agonizing moans on several occasions coming from the castle’s corridors. Some people said they even saw Queen Elizabeth I in the Royal Library, in a black gown walking about. The first Duke of Buckingham, Sir George Villiers, is known to haunt one of the castle’s bedrooms, while the Long Walk is filled with wondering spirits.

3. Dragsholm Slot, Sealand, Denmark
Constructed in the twelfth century, the Dragsholm castle was home to kings and noble families has now been converted into a hotel, home to three ghosts: a gray lady, a white one and the ghost of the Earl of Bothwell. The gray lady is said to be a maiden that worked in the castle, while the white lady is the daughter of one of the owners of the castle. Her father caught her in love with a common man and imprisoned her in the castle’s dungeons. In 1930, while building new toilets for the castles, the workers found a skeleton with a white dress imprisoned in the wall.

4. Edinburgh Castle, Scotland
Located on a volcano that turned into a rock, the castle is the center of Scottish history for over 800 years now. After a terrifying plague, officials decided to build the new city over the remains of the old one. The Underground city was discovered in 1990 perfectly preserved while some people were renovating a home. There have been stories of people grabbed by icy hands, shows of light of unknown origin or voices heard throughout the grounds.

5. Ballygally Castle, Ireland
Built in 1625, the Ballygally Castle has now been turned to a hotel, occasionally haunted by Lady Shaw, a former lady of the Castle. She  loves knocking at the doors of various hotel rooms and finds it amusing when guests find no one there. Ballygally is located near the Giant’s Causeway, offering superb views of the Antrim Mountains and the Irish Sea.
